Charles Dickens
Charles Dickens (1812-1870). Considered by some to be the greatest writer of his time.
He came to Kent when he was five years old and enjoyed a happy childhood in Chatham. In 1836 Charles Dickens visited Chalk Village for his honeymoon with his new bride Catherine Holgarth. Whilst Dickens resided in nearby Higham at Gads Hill Place from around 1856 until his death in 1870 he enjoyed long walks through the surrounding countryside often taking in both villages of Shorne and Chalk.
