Joanna Lumley was born in Srinagar, Kashmir, India on 1st May 1946, the daughter of Beatrice and Captain James Rutherford Lumley of the 2nd 6th Ghurka Rifles. She lived her childhood variously in England and several Middle Eastern/Asian countries - including 3 years in Malaya. Eventually Joanna was sent to school in Kent and Sussex, where she boarded at Mickledene School, followed by St. Mary's Anglican Convent School, Hastings.
